WKV ESCUELA ISLA CORDONCILLO

UPDATE (Aug. 05): Special report from S/V Carina

It’s hard to live without a cause. Something to believe in, something to fight for! A chance to reach out…a chance to go the distance to make a difference. Today’s report comes to you from above water a distance away in the heart of El Salvador.

Young boy with Hammerhead Shark.
Central America’s smallest country, El Salvador is a beautiful nation trying hard to regain economic footing lost after a history of difficult times. Natural disasters and civil strife have tested the heartiest of hearts through the years. But you would never know it from meeting the locals. I guess the same can be said the world over. Salvadorans, like Nicaraguans are some of the most gracious, friendliest people I have come to know. Simply good people doing what they can with the little they have to provide for their families and live contently. The human spirit lives on.

 ESCUELA De ISLA CORDONCILLO

On an island called Isla Cordoncillo, in the middle of Estero Jaltepecque, there sits a small 2 room school house named Escuela De Isla Cordoncillo. The school came to the attention of World Kids and the Bahia Del Sol cruising fleet after Hurricane Adrian passed over. About 100 families live on the island. Most are fisherman. Escuela De Isla Cordoncillo is very humble to say the least. 75 children attend the two room school house. 29 children are of preschool age. The remainder of the students huddle together crowded in the 20 x 20 class.

Escuela De Isla Cordoncillo

There is no electricity and no running water. Drinking water must be rowed across the estuary by cayuco. The Bahia Del Sol cruising fleet has come together to make repairs and improvements to the school. $873. has been raised thus far, headed up by S/V Carina. The target is to raise a minimum of $2000. The funds will be used to build a separate structure for the pre-schoolers, with metal beams, leak proof roof and cement flooring. Funds will also be used for school books, activities, teachers supplies and a water cistern, not to mention latrines and a 12 volt electrical system.

The school needs all the help they can get. Anything you can do to chip in would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Philip or Leslie on S/V Carina at:
